about ecosystem

This page has been designed to help our visitors discover the natural wonders of Stone Mountain Park!

There are several different (and unique) environments within Stone Mountain Park. Exploring these will reveal the diverse number of plants and animals that inhabit the park. Over two-thirds of the park has been designated the “Natural District” by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association. The Natural District includes pristine woodlands, streams, lakes, granite outcrops and the mountain itself. The nature garden will introduce visitors to a variety of native plants, trees and flowering shrubs. The songbird habitat will introduce visitors to a variety of birds found in the park.

The Cherokee Trail is a 5 mile historic trail which explores much of the Natural District around the base of Stone Mountain. It was designated a National Recreation Trail in 1971 (Stone Mountain Historic Trail). Find information on National Recreation Trails at http://tutsan.forest.net/trails/default.htm.

For information on the Boy Scout sponsored hike around the mountain visit: http://www.cherokeetrail-ga.org/.

while discovering the ecosystem, please be aware

The ecosystem on the mountain is quite sensitive to foot traffic.  Please stay on the sidewalks or marked trails when exploring.

Wildflowers are abundant and beautiful in many areas of the Park. Do not pick any plant or plant parts that grow in the Park.

Visitors are prohibited from removing, injuring, or defacing any flower, plant, tree, shrub, rock or wildlife.

At Stone Mountain Park dogs are welcome on hiking trails, excluding the walk up trail to the top. They must be accompanied by an owner on a 6 foot leash!  You can enjoy your dog off leash at the Stone Mountain village dog park located between 3rd and 4th streets.

In an effort to reduce stream bank erosion and bacterial contamination, please keep your dog out of the creeks in the Park.
