Stone Mountain Park is protected by the Stone Mountain Park Department of Public Safety (DPS), which provides Police (law enforcement), Fire, Emergency Medical, and Rescue services to between 4 and 5 million visitors and employees annually. DPS is a state authority law enforcement agency of medium size. All police officers are Georgia POST certified, with law enforcement authority and powers of arrest the same as any county or city police officer. The police powers of DPS are granted by the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, section 12-3-194.1. DPS responds to between 5 and 6 thousand calls for public safety services annually. The Department possesses state-of-the-art equipment, ranging from new police and fire rescue vehicles, to thermal imaging cameras, night vision, and threat detection electronics. Emergency Call Boxes are located throughout the park and on the Walk-up Trail for visitors to request assistance. All police and fire rescue vehicles are equipped with AED (heart defibrillators) and employees are trained in CPR. Fire Rescue personnel are state certified Emergency Medical Technicians-Intermediate and firefighters. Additionally, the Park has extensive video surveillance throughout. DPS also operates and maintains a helicopter Aviation Unit, High-Angle Mountain Rescue Team, Dive Rescue Team, Hazardous Materials response, and Lake Patrol. DPS has two employees that have graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia and three employees that have graduated from the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College in Columbus, Georgia. Additionally, two employees have received the Georgia Governor's Award for Public Safety for their "Outstanding Contribution Which Enhanced the Profession". |
